Weld Commissioners Recognize Platte Valley Students

During Wednesday’s Board Meeting, the Weld County Commissioners recognized two Platte Valley students for their charitable contributions to Weld County foster children. Chairman William Garcia read two proclamations of appreciation into the record: one for Platte Valley High School student Graciela Sardina Ayala and one for Platte Valley Elementary School student Joshua Yancy.

As a project for the Family, Career and Community Leaders of America group, to which she belongs, Graciela organized a gift and donation drive to collect and provide gifts to Weld County foster children at Christmas.

Healthy Weld 2020 Helps Platteville Fitness Room

Weld County Commissioner Sean Conway joined Platteville Mayor Bonnie Dunston, Town Manager Troy Renken, Weld County School District RE-1 Superintendent Jo Barbie, South Valley Middle School Principal Jeff Angus and several community members Monday, January 28, 2013, for the official opening of the Platteville Fitness Room.

The fitness room, located in the South Valley Middle School, 1004 Main St., in Platteville, was the result of area entities combining resources to meet a need in the community. The school district and the town agreed to provide space and supervision for the fitness room which is open to the community three days a week. A $5,000 grant from the Healthy Weld 2020 program enabled the two entities to purchase treadmills, elliptical cycles and recumbent bikes for the fitness room.

At the May 23,2012 Board of Education meeting, the decision was made to non-renew the administrative contract of the principal at Weld Central High School. 

Colorado online public school students stay busy outside the “classroom”

 

The results of a new survey conducted by the Colorado Coalition of Cyberschool Families (CCCF) demonstrate that Colorado’s online students are active, engaged in their communities and find unique ways to fulfill their own interests away from a traditional brick-and-mortar school. Of students who participated in the survey about how they spend their time, 88 percent of these children who are enrolled in full-time virtual public schools spend at least one hour each day engaged in an extra-curricular activity outside the home. What’s more, 99 percent of the students who completed the survey socialize with peers at least one hour each day.

One hundred scholarships available for teachers seeking National Board certification

The Colorado Department of Education’s Office of Professional Services and Educator Licensing today announced the limited availability of a new round of scholarships to support teachers applying for National Board Certification with the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards.
